EVOO

We all know the great benefits associated with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), right? Absolutely!

But do you know how to choose a high-quality bottle of EVOO? Read on!

It’s more than price. Let’s start with that. Choosing a high-quality EVOO can make a big difference in flavor, health benefits and cooking results.

Here are a few key tips for selecting a high-quality EVOO:

1. Look for certification

A high-quality EVOO often comes with certifications from regulatory bodies like the California Olive Oil Council (COOC) in the U.S. or European Union Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). These ensure the oil meets strict quality and production standards.

2. Check the harvest date

Freshness is crucial for EVOO quality, as it deteriorates with time. Aim for an EVOO harvested within the past 12 to 18 months. The closer the bottling or harvest date, the better the flavor and nutritional quality.

3. Select dark bottles

Dark, glass bottles help protect the oil from light, which can cause it to oxidize and lose flavor. High-quality EVOO brands usually use dark bottles to preserve quality.

4. Taste and smell

Good EVOO will have a fresh, fruity aroma and a peppery or slightly bitter taste, which indicates high levels of healthy polyphenols. Rancid or musty aromas can indicate poor storage or old oil, and a lack of bitterness may suggest it is not truly EVOO.

5. Check for cold-pressed labels

Cold pressing ensures the oil is extracted without heating, preserving its flavor and health benefits. Look for "first cold-pressed" on the label, which confirms it's made using a gentle process to retain quality.
